What
is Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome 212 794 2000:
ME has been used in Britain since the inception of the modern definition of the disease by Ramsay in 1955, and later published by Donald Acheson. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is also known as Chronic Fatigue
Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS) (see reprint
of Ramsay's book in this website BOOKS section). At one time it was termed Post Viral Fatigue. We have used the term for the past decade, it seemed to carry more weight and be less trivial when reporting the condition to medical collegues and to insirance companies. The pendulum has swung back again from CFS to ME with a slight semantic change in the word Encephlopahy from Encephalitis.
The CDC adopted the Keiji Fukuda et al (1994) criteria listed below: 1) Clinically evaluated unexplained persistant or relapsing fatigue of 6 more
more months duration that is of new onset and not lifelong or due to other medical
conditions. It is not the result of ongoing exertion, NOT substatially alleviated
by rest, and results in substantial reduction in previous levels of professional
and social activities. 2) The concurrent occurrence of four or more of these symptoms:
Substantial impairment in Short term memory or Concentration
Sore throat
Tender lymph nodes
Muscle Pain
Multi joint pain without swelling or redness
Headaches of a new type, pattern or severity
Unrefreshing sleep
Post exertional malaise lasting more than 24 hours
These symptoms must have persisted or recurred during six or more consecutive
months and must not have not predated the condition.
The criteria and diagnosis are elaborated in Dr Enlander's book THE CFS HANDBOOK
(see book section)
